Defining Politics, Ethics & Justice

Politics:

  1. The art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs.
  2. The activities or affairs engaged in by a government, politician, or political party.
  3. The methods or tactics involved in managing a state or government. The word politics may have been derived from the word “polite” implying polite manipulation of people!

Ethics:

Morals are social laws – or agreements collectively arrived at by all the members of any society over a long period in order to ensure a harmonious and stable social order. Hence “morals” can be looked at as time tested and stable working principles in the social context in a group.  Morals for different groups can be totally different – as we can see all over the world.Ethics is very different from morals – contrary to the general perception and understanding! The best definition for Ethics is found in Veda as “Dharma”. The cardinal principle in Vedic Dharma is – “Sarve Janah Sukhino Bhavanthu” –OR- “Lokah Smastha Sukhino Bhavanthu”. This literally means “Let all be happy every where in the world”.

How is such all pervasive happiness possible?  Well it is not definitely impossible – if only every one can learn to be happy over other’s happiness! But this is not to be!  Most people are unhappy – not because there have some particular personal problem unresolved – but only because the other one in the neighborhood appears to be very happy!

Ethics is all about all 3 … thought, word and deed …  aligned and focused towards ensuring the greatest good for the largest number of life forms! (including plants & animals).

Justice:

Justice is the connecting bridge between politics & ethics. If politics is all about governing & administering a society or a nation – ethics is about involving in only such ideas & actions that will result in general well being and good for maximum number of humans, plants & animals (if not all) – then justice is the system that will ensure non-violation of ethics by individuals & groups – while indulging in politics. If there is no violation of ethics in any society – and that all individuals voluntarily comply with ethics & morals laid down within the society – the justice system will be rendered redundant.

Conclusion:

The health & happiness of any society is well secured – as long as there is well meaning and balanced collision between political systems & justice systems – in order to implement ethics.  Instead of collision – if there is collusion between political system & justice system – that society will degrade & degenerate … as always happens in nations practicing autocracy and dictatorships in governance. This is how bloody revolutions had taken place throughout the history of mankind!
